Queensland Government Confirms Boost to Atherton Hospital Oncology Services
Published in News on December 31, 2025
The Queensland Government has announced a significant expansion of oncology services at Atherton Hospital, enhancing cancer treatment access for residents of the Tablelands region. The upgrade will enable the hospital to deliver chemotherapy services five days a week, an increase from its current three-day schedule, helping more patients receive care closer to home and their support networks.
Health Minister Tim Nicholls highlighted that strengthening local services is central to ensuring patients do not have to travel long distances for essential treatments. The expansion is expected to boost the number of chemotherapy sessions delivered each week — from an average of 15 to about 25 — reducing the need for patients to undertake long trips to larger regional centres.
“We know how important it is for patients to stay connected with their support networks during treatment,” Nicholls said, stressing that the increase in service availability supports both patients and families.
Supporting Regional Cancer Care
Patients at Atherton Hospital are currently overseen by specialist cancer teams from the Liz Plummer Cancer Centre at Cairns Hospital, with treatment referrals coordinated between the facilities. Expanding oncology services locally means that more people can begin and continue their treatment within their own community, alleviating travel burdens.
Chief Executive Leena Singh noted that the oncology expansion forms part of broader infrastructure upgrades at Atherton Hospital. This includes a $12.9 million refurbishment of the existing South Ward, a project aimed at modernising patient accommodation and care spaces as part of a commitment to frontline health outcomes.
Preparatory works are currently underway to establish a temporary ward to support ongoing refurbishment, with plans to develop a modern 25-bed unit that will provide flexible and comfortable spaces for patients and staff once complete.
Local Impact and Community Benefits
For many local patients, the increased availability of chemotherapy sessions locally means fewer arduous trips along rural highways — a factor especially significant during the physical and emotional strain of cancer treatment. Atherton oncology team members have expressed pride in the expansion, noting the value of being able to offer more regular, personalised care to community members “through what can be the most challenging time of their lives.”
This announcement follows broader regional healthcare developments, including hospital ward refurbishments and service expansions, underscoring the state’s ongoing focus on improving access to quality health services across Queensland.
